AI Roleplay Glossary

It’s 2024 and AI is literally “eating the world”, in the sense that it is going to impact our lives at every level and many of the things we do are going to change forever.

Roleplay has not been left apart as Roleplaying with AI has been literally booming in the past months. In this fast moving landscape, every roleplayer has to stay up to date and enrich its vocabulary with new AI Related terms.

A4A

Any for Any. Common partner search term. Usually used when a person is willing to play either male, female or other and has no preference on what their partner chooses to play.

Action

putting a character’s actions inside asterisks like this instead of writing them out

Activity

The frequency with which you roleplay on a specific account.

Admin

Person in control of the roleplay group

Advanced Literate

AdvLit, Advanced Lit. This refers to the type of roleplaying where the writers enjoy going into detail/depth with their role plays and value proper grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Usually refers to talented writers.

AI (artificial intelligence)

AI stands for artificial intelligence, which is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines or computer systems. AI can mimic human capabilities such as communication, learning, and decision-making.

AFCH

Actual faceclaim help; just for fc rph content.

Algorithm

An algorithm is a sequence of rules given to an AI machine to perform a task or solve a problem. Common algorithms include classification, regression, and clustering.

Anthro

Anthropomorphic. A character that shares both animalistic and human features, often: Bipedal, covered in fur/feathers, wings/other appendages such as tails and animal ears, animal head, etc.

Antiship: a relationship you don’t want together and / or won’t roleplay.

Appless

a roleplay you can join without filling out an application

Application / App / Audition

A form that has to be filled out to join a roleplay.

Applicant

Person applying for a role in a group or 1x1.

Ask

A roleplay in which answering anonymous questions is a primary feature

AU

Alternate Universe. Non-canon universes.

Auto

Short for “Automatic” to auto someone is to put in your post what they did, whether it be “they fell” or “they walked out if the room.” A sanctioned ‘auto’ would be a player who couldn’t continue scene or participate at that time so other players moved them to carry on. Other autos should be discussed with players prior.

Auto-Hit

Assumption within a post that an attack will land upon an opponent character, often includes assumption of how much/what type of damage said opponent will receive.

Bio

A roleplay in which admins create the characters.

Broship / BrOTP

A platonic relationship between two or more characters.

Cai / C.ai

Short for Character AI (see below)

Canon

Canon refers to material related to the storyline that is considered “official”, either by the story creator(s) or the audience. The flipside is something being non-canon: this happens when something is created and is not official.

Canon-Based

A roleplay that sticks to canon events.

Canon-Divergent / Redo

A roleplay that sticks to the basic canon foundations but not to specific events.

CC

Canon Character; character that already exists in the fandom.

Char

Short for ‘Character.’

Character AI

Probably the most famous AI App for Roleplay. Link

Character Bleed

When a player's real feelings become entwined with or dependent on their characters. Character bleed is common and something all roleplayers should watch out for.

Character Giveaway

Allowing people to take characters without applying for them.

Chatbot

A chatbot is a software application that is designed to imitate human conversation through text or voice commands.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched on November 30, 2022. It is currently the most well known and used chatbot on the planet.

Chub

A famous open source AI Characters repository: Chub AI.

Chemistry

The connection between two players / characters.

Closed

(See “Open). When a roleplay is closed, that means that it is not presently able for someone to join in.

Also means a starter that’s only open to the person specified.

Co-Admin / Mod

A person that helps the main admin with the roleplay group. some co-admins have equal authority and are all considered a ‘main admin’.

Comm

Community.

Crackship

A relationship that is considered unusual or unlikely, eg. Harry/Minerva.

Creator / Bot Creator

The person who created an AI Character.

Crossover

The combination of two or three different fandoms

CW

Content warning.

Discord

A social network many people use to roleplay. It contains many communities (servers) related to roleplay stuff. Link

DM

DM can be used in reference to either “Direct Message” (private message/PM) or “Dungeon Master” (see GM)

DnD

Dungeons & Dragons (commonly abbreviated as D&D or DnD) is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game (RPG) originally created and designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. The game was first published in 1974 by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. (TSR). The Original tabletop roleplaying game that heavily influences a lot of written roleplay today.

Draft

To save threads to your tumblr drafts to reply to later.

Drop

To stop replying to a thread before it’s completed.

Edgy

In RP edgy typically refers to a character with an overly tragic, depressing, or dark backstory.

Endgame

A relationship that will be happening at the end of the roleplay.

ERP

Erotic roleplay. Any roleplay with erotic themes at the forefront.

Example DIalogues

Dialogues used in an AI Character definition prompt to help the AI understand the behaviour or a particular way of speaking for the character. Example dialogues are essential to produce consistent and well-written AI Characters. Read More

Exclusive

A blog that won’t roleplay / ship with certain muses because they already have a partner that plays them.

F4M

Common partner search term. Usually used when a person playing a female is searching for a person playing a male; sometimes used when looking for said genders irl. F4F, female for female. F4A, female for any, F4T female for Trans, F4Futa.

Faceclaim / PB / Playby

The face used to represent the character.

Fandom

A love for a particular community, often books, games, movies, comics and other media. If someone is roleplaying a fandom they will take on attributes from that culture ie; Playing Harry Potter and having the setting be Hogwarts. Fandom is also the name of a wiki hosting service that hosts wikis mainly on entertainment topics. The privately held, for-profit Delaware company was founded in October 2004 by Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales and Angela Beesley.

FC

Short for “Face Claim”. A FC is a visual representation of your character’s appearance, such as art by you or by someone else.

Femslash / Femmeslash

A relationship between two women.

Fluff/Filler

When a roleplay response is filled with pointless words or descriptions to lengthen the size of the post.

For BL

For blacklists.

Format

The use of HTML to add style to replies for aesthetic purposes.

Forum or Forum RP

A forum RP is a RP on a concrete website (such as RP Nation ) or hosting platform (such as jcink ) with its own setup, graphics, and rules. There are multiple different forums to RP on and are sometimes difficult to find. On a forum, replies are sometimes expected to be longer.

Freeform

A style of roleplay without strict guidelines in relation to: length or format of posts, usage of characters, plot or determining the success of actions including combat.

FTB / Fade to Black

Short for “Fade to Black” typically used to close scenes out or insinuate that characters had sexual relations without actually roleplaying them.

Furry

Same as Anthro. A character that shares both animalistic and human features, often: Bipedal, covered in fur/feathers, wings/other appendages such as tails and animal ears, animal head, etc. Examples of Furry Characters

Futa

Short for Futanari, the Japanese word for hermaphrodite but when used in roleplay is a MYTHICAL CREATURE. These characters have both female and male genitalia, most often having unrealistic proportions. Here are some examples of Futanari

G4A

Group for Any. This is a group looking for any type of player or character to join.

Game Master (Gamemaster) / GM

Stands for Gamemaster. Also referred to as DM (Dungeon Master) This is a person who is in charge of weaving the story for 1 or more roleplay participants.

Gary Stu

The male version of ‘Mary Sue’. Often but not always a self-insert character that is meant to be desired by all within the plot. Is typically more powerful than other characters, and has high plot importance. Gary Stus are often Adonis like in looks, unrealistically intelligent, and deft. Always lacking in flaws and are “too perfect” (See OP)

Gender Ban

Banning applications for a certain gender when ratios are “uneven”.

Gif / Icon Chat

Dialogue-centric threads using gifs or icons to indicate emotions or actions

Gif / Icon Para:

A para that include gifs or icons as a visual aid.

Ghosting

Although not always intentional, “Ghosting” is usually used when a player is too coward to tell their partner they are moving on or can’t continue. Ghosted is the act of being left. Ghosting is frowned upon in the RP communities.

Godmodding

A character whose abilities are limitless. Often acts of forcibly causing something to happen, i.e. making someone else’s character move without consent, is godmodding. (See ‘OP’ or ‘Auto’)

Greeter

A starter posted to initiate interaction with a new follower.

Hammer-Space/”Bag of Holding”

The use of inventory that was not established upon a character’s person when the roleplay first started, IE suddenly pulling out a gun without having brought it.

Headcanon / HC / Fanon

Details made up by the fans or the player, often (but not always) without deviating from a fandom’s canon.

Hentai

A genre of Japanese manga and anime characterised by overtly sexualized characters and sexually explicit images and plots. Examples of Hentai Characters

Het

A relationship between a man and a woman.

Hiatus

A break away from a roleplay account for an extended period of time.

HP

Hit points. Used in tandem with ‘Stats’ and refers to how much life a character has.

IC

In Character. This refers to anything and everything said and done in character in the roleplay group or chat.

Indie / Independent

A roleplay account that isn’t attached to a group or person.

Immersive/Immersion

Immersive is a word used in roleplaying to describe a level of deep involvement with a play or character.

Interrupting/Interruption

The prevention of another roleplayer’s actions through reasonable time to perform a counter/response action.

IRL

In Real Life. This is something someone will say in reference to anything happening in real life and not in the play or online.

Large language model

A large language model (LLM) is an AI model that has been trained on large amounts of text so that it can understand language and generate human-like text.

LLM

LSRP(G)

Legit serious roleplay (group); guidelines

M4F

Common partner search term. Usually used when a person playing a male is searching for a person playing a female; sometimes used when looking for said genders irl. M4M, male for male. M4A, male for any, M4T male for Trans, M4Futai

M!A / Magic!Anon

Person that has the ‘ability’ to make indie characters do or become anything via anonymous message if the player is willing to go through with it, eg. “your character is a wizard for the next 24 hours.”

Main

A partner (or partners) they interact with frequently and prioritise over other partners.

Main Character Syndrome

(or Protagonist syndrome) When a player makes everything about themselves or actively tries to steer the story to revolve around themselves.

Mary Sue

Often but not always a self-insert character that is meant to be desired by all within the plot. Is typically more powerful than other characters, and has high plot importance. Mary Sues are often gorgeous in appearance, unrealistically intelligent, and deft. Always lacking in flaws and are “too perfect” Gary Stu is the Male version.

Mascot

Face used to represent the admin or (in indie) the player

MC

Abbreviation for Main Character

Meme

Something creative sent to a player’s inbox for them to reply to, typically prompted by reblogged posts, eg. lists of sentences or “Send me X and I’ll write Y.”

Metagaming

Metagaming is using external factors to affect the game, or go beyond the supposed limits or environment set by the game. This includes but isn’t limited to, using outside knowledge to alter your character’s course of action or knowing about conversations your character would have no way of knowing.

Midgame

A relationship that will be happening in the middle of the roleplay

Min/Maxer

Prevalent in any game with a defined combat system. A Min/Maxer is a term to describe someone whose sole aim is to create the most powerful character there is with no regard for lore, story, or any other consideration, except for power. This is the type of player who will choose a character purely for the mechanical benefits that each they provide. They will find and abuse any loopholes or broken mechanics at will. Optimization taken to the extreme, in other words.

MSRP

Multi-storyline roleplayer; a blog that has multiple verses (outdated).

Multifandom

A blog that has (or will roleplay with) characters from several fandoms.

MuMu / Multimuse

A blog that has multiple characters (muses) at once.

Multi-Para

Interacting via multiple paragraphs of prose

Multiverse

The combination of several different fandoms (in rp groups).

Multiship

A blog that carries out multiple ships at once, with the understanding that each ship is taking place in separate subverses.

Mun

The player. The real person behind the keyboard.

Murderhobo

A player character who wanders the gameworld, unattached to any community, indiscriminately killing and looting purely for their own amusement and self-interest. Murderhobo is a common DnD term.

Muse

A Muse in roleplay terms is usually used in reference to their character.

Mutual

Someone you follow that also follows you.

Neko

Characters that are human in nature, though often are younger and less developed; always feature cat/protruding animal ears of some kind and are often act like affectionate versions of the pet they are taking from.

New RP

For new roleplays.

Non-Canon

Something that happens in a roleplay that is not official, or just for funsies but will not be considered serious or part of the official storyline. An example would be a universe in which Batman had superpowers.

Non-Para

A roleplay in which paras aren’t a form of interaction.

Novella

Novella is a style of writing where a reply typically consists of multiple paragraphs and is in storybook format.. These replies are different and sometimes longer than normal Multi-Paragraph replies.

NPC

Non Playing Character. Non playable character. A fictional character created by the roleplayer, administrator, or other roleplayers. Non-player characters are, as their name suggests, not actively played by any one roleplayer.

NSFW

Not Safe For Work. This is anything you couldn’t show to a typical boss in a workplace or want a coworker to look over your shoulder and see/read. Although maybe attributed to just sex, it includes gore, language, violence and other explicit scenes.

OC

Original Character. A character created by an individual and not taken from a fandom or other media.

OCC

original canon character; character that’s mentioned in canon but not fleshed-out, eg. Daphne Greengrass in Harry Potter.

OOC

Out of Character. Things that the roleplayer is saying. OOC often applies to entire groups — e.g., the chat (OOC Chat) and discussions on a given roleplay are almost always is a separate OOC.

One liner

A single sentence response in a roleplay.

OP

Original poster.

One-Shot

Roleplays that often feature bombastic/crazy plots that in no way affect the development of any predefined characters. Similar to that of having a dream in real life.

Open

When an rp is open, that means that anyone who is capable to can join in on an already on-going roleplay.

OP

An abbreviation for Over Powered. This term is used to refer to a character who has more power (usually physically) than is canonically (see ‘Canon’) logical.

Open

A starter that’s open to replies from several people.

Opener

Or starter. This refers to your character’s first post in a play or group. It is how you introduce your character, and is often but not always lengthier than the average post.

Original

a roleplay with 100% original content.

OTP

One true pairing; the ship you love above all others.

Paper-Bagging

Hiding of powers/results of an attack, or establishing the effects of an attack after they got hit by it. IE: Slashing someone with a knife in one post only to then reveal in the next post that it was covered in poison. Oft relates to metagaming.

Para

Short for paragraph. Usually only referenced in regards to post length.

Parameter / Parameters

Parameters of a Language Model are the values that determine the behaviour of a language model itself and determine how it will convert an input (text input) into an output (text output). They are measured in billions of parameters and as a general rule, the higher the number of parameters, the better will be the output of the language model. Usually the information about how many parameters an LLM has is contained in its name (i.e. Llama 2 13B, where 13B is the number of parameters, 13 billions in this case).

Partner

Person you roleplay with, typically long-term

Polyship

A romantic relationship between three or more characters.

Plot

the story being played out in a certain roleplay.

Post

A single instance of roleplay, typically written by one player. Posts can be initial posts (sometimes called openers or starters, but not usually referred to as anything special), or they can be replies to other posts.

Post Time-Limit

An agreed upon and pre-established time limit within an rp of when people are expected to post. For larger groups, often missing the time limit can lead to your post being skipped and sometimes even a warning, ban or kick from the roleplay entirely.

Powergaming

Powergaming is playing with the aim of maximising progress towards a specific goal, to the exclusion of other considerations such as storytelling, atmosphere and camaraderie. Due to its focus on the letter of the rules over the spirit of the rules, it is often seen as unsporting, un-fun, or unsociable.” This includes but isn’t limited to godmoding/autoing or any play where you gain an unfair advantage by construing the worlds available means.

Powerplaying

Making your character all-knowing / all-powerful.

Pre-Made (OC)

Character created by the admin of a roleplay group.

Private

A blog that only roleplays with mutuals.

Prompt

A prompt is an input that a user feeds to an AI system in order to get a desired result or output.

Protag

Abbreviation for “protagonist”, aka the main character of a story. Note: Most RPers prefer that there be no distinct, announced, named protagonist. After all, everyone’s character can be a protagonist from their perspective. (see ‘Main Character Syndrome’)

Rarepair

A relationship that is rarely thought of, but not cracky.

Realism

The agreed upon preface that within roleplays certain standards are set upon what a character can and cannot do within an established plot/setting.

Reddit

Popular social media that hosts numerous communities of roleplayers. link

Reply

A single instance of roleplay, written by one player, in response to another player. All replies are posts, but not all posts are replies.

Retcon

Or Retconning. The rescinding of a plot or In Character occurrence; roleplayers acting as if a plot never occurred.

RFP

Removed for privacy; used by admins when posting applications.

RP

Short for Roleplay. The

RPA

Roleplay advice / assistant.

RPC

Roleplay critic / community.

RP Canon

The official details of a roleplay; often used when a roleplay specifically deviates from a fandom’s canon.

RPCHA

Roleplay critic helper adviser / assistant

RPCW

Roleplay critic writer; just for rph content

RPG / RP(G)

Roleplay game or roleplay group.

RPH

Roleplay help(er).

RPHR

Roleplay help resources; just for rph content.

RPer / Player / Mun

Person in control of the character.

RPF

RPF stands for “Roleplay Fighting.”

RPO

Roleplay opinions.

RPT

Roleplay talk.

Self-Insert

When a player models their character after themselves and is essentially just playing themselves in roleplay situations.

Self-Para

Written by a player to develop their character without interaction.

Selective

A blog that is strict about who they follow and roleplay with.

Semi-Hiatus

Decreased activity for an extended period of time.

Semi-Selective

A blog that is picky about who they follow and roleplay with.

Singleverse

A blog that has just one verse that all their interactions take place in.

Singleship

A blog that only ships with one person at a time.

Ship

A ship is a romantic roleplay relationship. It’s used two different ways; Some use ship to refer to a set of characters in a relationship who move from one RP setting to the next and continue their story as canon. Others would use ship to refer to a romantic relationship they would support whether canon or not.

Shipping

The act of wanting certain characters to be together.

Shotgunning

When a player joins a group and messages multiple people the same thing. Usually “wanna rp?” It is considered a bannable offence in most communities.

Skeleton

A roleplay in which admins create the character basics and the players expand.

Slash

A relationship between two men.

Smut

Used in reference to any type of NSFW, sexual roleplay encounter.

Starter Call

A post made to see who wants a starter from that account; starters will typically be written for everyone who ‘likes’ the post.

Subreddit

A subreddit is a specific online community, and the posts associated with it, on the social media website Reddit. Subreddits are dedicated to a particular topic that people write about, and they're denoted by /r/, followed by the subreddit's name, e.g., /r/roleplay.

Subverse

A verse that takes place within another verse, but separate from the main events.

Starter

Or opener. This refers to your character's first post in a play or group. It is how you introduce your character and is often but not always lengthier than the average post.

Startgame

A relationship that will be happening at the start of the roleplay.

Stats

Short for “statistics”. These are numbers that represent your character’s actions and abilities. For example, there could be a stat for agility that you could assign between 1-10 and that would be able to help or hinder your character’s dodge-ability during a fight. It is very possible to have a RP without stats.

System Prompt

An instruction that is passed to the language model as a setting command: it is often used to provide the models with instructions about the task it has to complete that has to remain the same all the way through the conversation. An example of system prompt could be “you must act as an experienced roleplayer and engage with {{user}} in a roleplay game. Be creative, stay in character and keep the conversation going”.

TBA

To be affirmed

TBD

To be decided / deleted.

Teleporting

Instantly travelling from point A to point B, or the use of speeds beyond the acceptable scale of a roleplay to travel to different locations.

Thread

Each separate interaction.

Timeskip

Also used to skip forward, either in a thread or in a plot’s timeline.

Token

A token is a basic unit of text that an LLM uses to understand and generate language. A token may be an entire word or parts of a word.

Trigger

Something that upsets and harms a person’s well-being and mental health.

Trigger / Content Warnings

"trigger cw” or “trigger tw” tags on posts so people can avoid seeing things that trigger them.

TW

Trigger warning.

U(M)C / Under Co.

Under (major) construction, a blog is being edited.

UTP

Up to player; used by admins when character details can be decided by applicants.

Verse

The universe a plot / roleplay takes place in

W++

A format for writing character’s description to be passed to large language models. W++ is a format used to define characters and how they should be used in the model. The reason for using it is due to its ease of creating characters from a template and how it is generally one of the most accurate formats the model recognizes. More info

1-1, OneOne, 1on1 etc. This refers to roleplays where there are only two players.

1x1x1

a roleplay between three people.

2x2

A Roleplay between four people.

5x5

A roleplay between ten people (so on and so forth).
